Salep is one of the indispensable Turkish drink of cold winter days. It is delicious and keeps you warm in freezing winter days.

Salep is a flour made from wild orchid tubers. It is very popular as a beverage but you can also prepare desserts such as salep pudding and ice cream.

Recent years, I adore salep. When my family visits me ,they always bring me some salep from Turkey.

Even when I visit Turkey, I prepare salep at home instead of drinking at cafe because they put sugar and I don’t like it.

There are ready prepackaged versions of salep which is similar to packets of hot chocolate and cafe, simply mix the powder with hot water or milk. I prefer to authentic ones which are sold in spice shops.

It is not only delicious and warming but also medical drink. It contains a glucomannan which heals respiratory problems like cough and bronchitis.

It is prepared with milk which is a strong source of protein and calcium. It helps you to lose weight. You can drink it even after workout. All you need to pay attention to measurements of ingredients. Because it is super nutritious and it can make you gain weight instead of lose it.

Salep Recipe

Ingredients for one person

  • 1 glass of milk

  • 1 tbsp powdered salep

  • For garnish you can use cinnamon, pistachio or ginger.

Steps to make it

  • Mix salep with milk in a saucepan and stir mixture slowly.

  • Stir constantly until very thick about 10 minutes.

  • Pour salep into mug and garnish .

Salep is thick which  has similar texture with Italian hot chocolate. Garnishing with spices such as cinnamon makes this delicious  exotic beverage.
